In a circular economy, the aim is to create economic value from a smaller amount of materials and to preserve the materials and the value associated with them in the economy for as long as possible.
In practice, the circular economy means improving material efficiency, extending the life cycle of products through product design and increasing recycling. In addition, in a circular economy, services are consumed instead of products. And products are shared, reused and repaired instead of purchased.
The circular economy is estimated to generate at least EUR 1.5–2.5 billion in GDP growth in Finland by 2030. The greatest value potential lies in material and waste flows, equipment maintenance, reuse and remanufacturing.
At its best, the circular economy brings new jobs, new business and cost savings. Reducing the consumption of natural resources and the amount of waste generated alleviate the environmental burden we cause.
